Preparing to Search
- Complete the activities and answer the questions below. To practice, we'll be going through the steps and developing a paper topic and searching for resources related to your topic. Later, you will use this same worksheet to develop your own topic and prepare to search for your own resources.
(Example topics include Saint Francis of Assisi, geriatric nursing, careers in business, service learning, etc...)
Working with Search Results
- Go to the homepage for the USF Vann Library: library.sf.edu. Using your answers from the PREPARING TO SEARCH section above, use the OneSearch search box on the library homepage to find resources for the topic you selected. Based on your search results, answer the questions below.
Remember to think of alternative ways to describe the same thing. For example, if you are searching for information about Saint Francis and the Sultan of Egypt, try including the Sultan's full name rather than just the word "sultan."
Other than adding/removing search terms, what are some of the ways you can limit your results?
HINT: Look on the left side of your screen.
Limit your results to only books. How many books are there on your topic?
How can you tell if a book is available for checkout? How can you tell if a book is an ebook?
Find a book that is available from somewhere other than Saint Francis. What are your options for getting this book?
HINT: You might need to scroll through a few pages of results to find a title that we don't have at USF.
